Doctor Rockits Blues Bar was founded in June of 1989 as "Rum Boogie" a long-defunct Chicago Club mentioned in Chuck Berry's autobiography. The name was changed to Dr Rockits Blues Bar in 1990 to avoid a name conflict in Memphis, Tenn. The building that we are in is one of the oldest still standing in Corpus Christi, built at the turn of the last century, 1900. It has survived the most devastating hurricanes this area has experienced: In 1900 with 16' tides and killing thousands as well as the Hurricane of 1919 where 287 lives were lost. Our part of the building has housed a bar of some sort since its beginning, making us the oldest bar in Corpus Christi!
Some more firsts:
- "Longest running Open Mike Night" (Mondays since 1989)
- "Longest running Live Entertainment Venue" (since 1989)
- "Live Entertainment Nightly" (probably the only one in the country!)
The main bar itself probably dates from the 1950's and originally had a padded front rail. The décor is eclectic and includes vintage beer memorabilia from the heydays of Schlitz, Jax, Falstaff, Pearl, Lone Star and Grand Prize. The Stein collection features all American brews.
We have a full bar and feature many fine draft beers with a constantly changing menu but always feature local Spoetzel Brewery's Shiner beers and ales.
We support and feature local artists and are proud of the many fine entertainers that have performed at Dr Rockits over the years.
Just to name a few: Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Delbert McClinton, Charlie Musselwhite, Los Lonely Boys, Joe Ely, Edgar Winter, Joe "King" Carrasco, The Wailers, Billy Joe Shaver, Rosie Flores, Sisters Morales, "Little Ed" and the Blues Imperials, Kim Wilson and William Clark.
